This is Russ, as I sat in the hospital for a couple days, I replayed everything in my head hundreds of times, things that I should have noticed as a warning, and what I could have done differently.
I’ve seen lots of comments so I’ll address a few of them, not being defensive at all.
In a normal car throttle sticking at 2200 RPM’s is not the end of the world, in my car that’s 900 ft/lbs of torque. I should have realized the load that was putting on the brakes. Didn’t cross my mind at the time. FYI: It had double springs on the throttle.
In a normal car, I could have pulled emergency brake, I even got a quote at Good Guy’s Del Mar for an electronic e-brake & bigger brakes. Hindsight’s 20-20, I was just gonna trailer it to a few shows & not drive it much till I could do that.
Why didn’t I downshift? Car had a B&M ratchet shifter, once I shifted up thru the gears you can’t downshift till you put it in park. So much going on in those last few seconds, forgot to downshift it after putting it in park, but it was probably too late to have had a big reduction in speed.
As far as I know, driver of van was not seriously injured. Beauty of a modern car with crumple zones, self tightening seat belts & air bags.
Car had liability coverage but no collision, I was still in the process of getting stated value insurance

if your gonna drive a 1300 hp v8 maybe check the brakes before leaving the driveway you dickhead
should have used the E-brake. Not yank it hard but pull it slow so the wheels dont stop turning but do slow the car down. oh and he already said the throttle sticks and i have to ride the breaks. For me with a car that costs more than my house i would as soon as something happens i dont like get it chekt out! i even do it with my 1500 euro car because i cant afford a new or even a newer second hand car.
Ss lots of us who've built, loved, & driven old schools for a long time, I'm sure most of us know-
Driving some of these projects aren't always under ideal conditions, (or 100% safe) and a big thanks for making this video the way you did👍🏼 It's always a classy move when you take the high road in a given situation, for the sake/safety/education of those who might benefit as a result of watching it👌🏼
Hindsight it always 20/20, & watching the guy's comments, his actions while he was driving, as well as his REactions, it's super easy to see this was a train wreck waiting to happen…
Glad things have ended up the way they have. I'm a bowtie guy, but that's a really good lookin sled. Hope it gets brought back to it's former glory, & a step or two beyond!
Stay safe out there y'all
🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼

Why the hell have harnesses if ur not gonna use them cmon man🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I will pray for these dumb f***s
I guess "brake failure" makes you sound less incompetent then "a complete lack of good judgment"
bom
Can't speak for traffic laws in the US, but had you driven that 'car' out in the traffic here and caused a serious accident, you would be seriously criminally negligent. You would very likely face a suspended prison sentence and have your driving license revoked for 2-5 years. Plus all the financial consequences.
If that was me you hit I'd just say hand me the keys and we're square. No harm no foul.
I'll fix the brakes and the throttle for you 😉
i hope the person infront is safe
This should be investigated like the guy who crashed his plane on purpose.
shows us the crash in it's entirety during the intro
"Hey there just a warning this video might be a little graphic"
I did a 100 mph into a concrete pillar (as a passenger in a Saab) some 26 years ago. Safety belt saved me (and Saab). Left both font teeth and an imprint of my glasses in that dash. Safety belts are there to save your life, not to avoid tickets.
This is what pilots call an accident chain. A series of ignored events that led to a catastrophic failure. Ego is a bitch. You can keep saying something is fine or no big deal, but what you're really doing is ignoring warning signs because you think you're above what's coming. Nothing wrong with being and staying humble guys.
Is it an impala
Omg your lip
And olso yuo gonna have to replace you turbo charger and yuo implala
That's a lot of power for the street
WOW that was a hard hit
