Howard's cams and Elgin are great options
In the 1990's, I had a '77 Malibu Classic sedan. The original 305 blew gaskets at 155k while driving 70mph on the intestate. A local backyard mechanic who had a nicely equipped garage installed a crate 350 complete for under $1000. Those days are gone!

One BIG problem I know of is the companies that you buy this stuff from manufacture everything in America. But they get raw castings from China. Why? Because it's very hard to get raw materials here not only due to supply chain issues, but also because the EPA heavily regulates the steel industry. Thank the EPA for any automotive problem you have
I can't imagine there aren't engine builders out there who don't know what brands of cams/lifters to avoid.

The 305 was a "smog" engine. Very low output and shouldn't be a stressed motor. Even big cam makers have farmed out production to little known countries for lower cost.
If you're buying parts, buy from the rebuilder. It's worth it. They know which parts cause issues and which vendors are legit.
The sad part is, sooner or later someone will fabricate old looking packaging and sell new lifters as nos. The following statement is my personal thought and opinion, nothing more, nothing less. So long as there is a profit to be made by selling low cost / quality products, people will continue to sell them.
Wizard in the 80's I did in my home garage dozens of 305 Chevy cams and lifters. Without AC in the car I could do it in 8 hrs with hand wrenches. So easy to do but sad they were failing so often.

O, Crap! I had a rebuild shop, do a stock build on my AMC 360. Bored 30 over, & such. I bought a cam & lifters, from Summit. Got it back & installed it in my Jeep. Somewhere around 600 miles, a lifter went out, taking the cam lobe with it. It Looked like, the lifter, jammed in it's bore, & ran until it ate a hole through it! And like your video shows, it was wore off crooked. I honed out & polished All the lifter bores. Flushed all the oil passages, pulled the oil pan & cleaned it too. Just buttoned it all back up, with a New Melling cam, & lifters. But,,,, I noticed the lifters, are made in Mexico! Your Crushing my Hopes!

You can order a cam from Competition cams but you have to request a hardened one or get one from Howards cams they are hardened and also you need to add in a high zinc additive with ZDDP in it

find a machinist for any type of equipment, any specialty. they'll turn parts for good money and youll never have an issue.
I dropped an engine block off at the machine shop today and the owner was commenting about how there is quality control issues going on across a lot of the big names with engine parts.

My father and I raced 2000cc DOHC VW engines……….. we ran new german/vw lifter/buckets, we never had a problem, despite them routinely pulling 7000rpm on commonly available 10w40 synthetic engine oil,no break in precautions etc. A bucket is indeed a flat surface running directly on a cam lobe (no roller), so I would say that it is absolutely a quality of component issue. Yes, we routinely had the rocker covers off every season to re-torque head studs, the 12:1 compression was hard on them, never saw any wear on the cams which were mild race spec. It seems that there is a niche for someone to make good quality flat tappet lifters, correctly hardened, its not rocket science.
Uncle Tony talks about poor quality parts all the time. Talented machinists are all fading away.
Would installing roller lifters and cam also be a possible solution? Don't they make roller lifter/cam kits for older engines?
How does OEM avoid this? US? Japan?
Wizard, I use and have for 50+ years, Crower cams and lifters. Still a family outfit, still all USA. Made with US steel. They are in San Diego. Never have had an issue.

600 seems cheap for parts made in the usa thats been sitting on a shelf for 30 to 40yrs! If you owned them and knew you couldn't replace them im sure you too would want top dollars! Im surprised people aren't buying up all old stock its only going to get worse!

Car wizard, I have much respect for you, however, calling an engine a motor is incorrect. A motor runs on electricity and an engine runs on fuel. Just saying my friend.
I just replaced my lifters to freshin up my jeep while I did a valve job. Like idiot threw out old ones soon as I started it after reassembly. 40 miles later 3 are complete junk. Bottoms all ground down and at an angle. In fact while it was idling a mystery noise sounds like a. Okt or socket falling down the motor. I now think it was part of the lifter that looks broken off. Chasing the misfire I now have new injectors and a new coil rail on it. Now it's all back apart, head off and needs a cam. Thanks to the quality new lifters that were made by company M.

I dont own a shoo or anything but just like working on my cars and motorcycles. I've seen this coming for a long time. The low quality of all parts.
It's really sad that a car built 50 years ago is still more reliable than newer cars with its original parts.
Roller cams are fine its old school flat tappets that are the problem
It's sad that a time proven thing like OHV flat tappet cams can't be built properly anymore. And these big companies still charge plenty for a crap product
