Thanks for being awesome with a PITA customer.
Once you got the v-belt on I would have probably had rechecked the torque on the bolts for the water pump pulley.
Dealer wants to charge me $1500 plus for the same job. Good job Ray.
Use a plastic razor scrapper. Get the multi-pack. 😉 Work Stocking stuffers
Why would the weep hole be on top? GRAVITY
No way 5 1/2 he labor unless you use only your feet. 👣
Okay. My previous comment was before I watched the 3 hours it took you to reinstall the serpentine belt. 😂
A "Labor Guide" exists to help estimate the cost of a repair, allowing a shop to quote a job ahead of time. The customer then agrees to pay the quoted cost if they choose to have the vehicle repaired. It is not necessarily a representation of the actual number of "hours" spent on a job, but instead a quoted cost for a repair. If you are a "Flat-rate" technician, your paycheck hours are the sum of all of the labor guide quoted hours in the pay period that were completed. So when you get better and faster and more experienced, you get paid better. In contrast if you work based on actual time spent instead, the technician gets paid less for being faster and better. Also the customer and shop would pay more for slower and less experienced mechanics, not to mention, there would be no quoting job prices ahead of time. Not a perfect system, but functional and scalable. My labor guide showed 3.5 hours. That includes post repair cleanup, and verification of the repair by warming up and test driving vehicle, which by itself can take up to a half an hour.
"Gravity" bro… have you ever seen coolant leak "up" …me neither, but that coolant leak looks like it might be coming from the head area lol. Did ya get your ass bit on this one bro? I definitely would have hooked the coolant pressure tester to it and pressurized the system before slapping that pump. But hey you got paid right hahaha.
Great video ! But I thought why am I watching this I wouldn’t buy American junk ever again .
honest work is all anyone can ask for. I am glad the people of your area have you around to get work done for them!
All the labor manuals I see are calling for 1.4 hours….
I have no Idea why Dealers scam people. You Your doing a great job doing this line of work.
What is this, a bicycle? Who uses 16 mm bolts?? Leave it to government motors…..
Iv worked on alot of gm produts im surprised the clowns dident drive the pump with the timing chain.
Awesome to know I have a similar mechanic to you, had initially been quoted 450 for water pump but it ended up being 280 with parts and labor because he knows what he's doing like you
Great vid!
Another risk similar to the ring, years ago my dad was working under a dashboard and his metal watchband touched a hot connection. Instantly got a nasty burn on his wrist.
be safe.
pump pulley bolts needed a final check…not just ratchet tight
Another Great Guy Pine Hollow Diagnostics😊😊
1 thing that has always pissed me off, bill is based on what "book" says labor time should take.
4:23, wife talkin to me, forgot about my nuts. LMFWAO!!!!!
yeah wait till you get all your arm hair in the turning motor
18:10 sounds like when marge is mad at homer
Need a link for those extensions with sockets at the end
You forgot to tighten the pulley bolts for the water pump when you reinstalled the belt…
I'm not quite sure about wearing shorts either. And from the looks of it, you went more like 90°. Shouldn't hurt anything.
Did he forget to torque the 4 pulley bolts?
At 200,000 miles, that should be the second water pump replacement. Going by flat rate can be tricky
Stop lying to people Ray, you actually getting paid from YouTube so you don’t even need to charge a cent
His lady shop helper is a cute lil hottie
gorgot final tourqe on pump pulley bolts before motor mount bracket.
GM tech here…. The book time is high because, according to procedure, you have to perform an engine/transmission mount balancing which takes a lot of time actually
As a shop owner, one thing you should always do is pick one labor guide and stick with it. I have gone through a lot of them, and most of them are close, but if you use all of them, the technicians will always want the highest labor. If you stick with one major labor guide and at the end of the day, it evens it self out. And on the jobs that you can beat buy more than 200% give the customer a break. At my shop, my technicians are, on average, 125% to 140% efficient on any given job.
You should always use the rubber cleaning disks on aluminum. G.M. has a TSB about using abrasive disks on the gasket surface of the intake because the grit ends up in the oil and destroys the engine. Im sure that it is not the best for coolant.
The only thing that bothered me was when you put the serpentine belt over the pulley on the alternator and it didn’t look like it was fitted right. I had a serpentine belt that I think when I replaced it was off a grove. My engine compartment was making noise like some one was shooting a pellet gun on the side on it. I shut down and when I looked in on my engine there were these black rubber strings all over the place and there was like three strings left going to the alternator and the water pump. After that I have been very careful when I replace my belt that it is align correctly.
My dad was one of a kind. He ran a repair shop from his home garage. Dad treated everyone with respect and fairness. And that is what he expected from others. He was busy from 8am to 6pm six days a week and ran his home based business for over thirty years. I miss him he was a great teacher. Thank you Rainman Ray you remind me so much of my dad.
You only snugged the pulley bolts😮
Just how did that engine compartment's plastic and rubber parts get so 'brand new' clean ?!
I just changed the fan clutch and water pump in my 04 trailblazer. I’m so glad I work on cars for a living. Saves me tons of money.
11:00 – Strap wrench will hold it while you break it free too. J/S
I wish Ray lived in my area true diagnosis the so called mechanics in everett read a code and replace the most expensive part and go in reverse from there nice to watch a an honest true man at work hope all is well for you and your loved ones
So to change water pump we dont have to Drain coolant?
Engineers and builders put things in the worst spot, they never think of future repairs, anyone in the service industry hates it, but we just deal with it
Hey you didn't tighten the pulley bolts
I have never understood why flat heads are a thing. Philips head is so much better.
