Mercedes created is own hidro-pneumatic system ,not like in the silver shadow that a permit was asked to citröen to use it´s system, 5 years ago i bought a Xantia because in 96 they made the first change on his suspenction system, mercedes aplied is system even to open and close windows in the previous model not electric
A maintenance nightmare and a money pit to own and run. It's the truth.
Excellent presentation on a phenomenal 6.9.
Remember, the original purchaser was elderly, rich, professional- and did not want to hear any exhaust noise entering the interior. QUIET= mature sober quality with power. In 1977-83 there was no loud exhaust fad, especially in a MERCEDES BENZ. Wait for the 190E 2.3-16 !. C.D. retired Star Technician in New Hampshire 🇺🇲👍
Do you have a car collection?
I have owned 2, a euro with and AMG prepped 6.9 and an American domestic. Great cars.
My complements mr.Tyrrell for presenting this magnificent car.Thank you!
Wow this one brings back some memories. I worked at a Mercedes specialist in the late 80's and we had a customer with exactly the same car, also in Milan Brown. He was a Chinese business man and he had pure white cotton seat covers and head rest covers fitted (that we had to be very careful with when we worked on the car). He drove it very sedately and did not look like the type to drive a fire breathing monster like the 450 SEL 6.9. I took it for a test drive a couple of times and could not believe the acceleration. The ONLY Mercedes of that era that I drove that would wheel spin on a dry road (uhm, apparently). Just select Drive and floor it (apparently).
In the front of the service book Mercedes even had the power & torque figures for that individual engine printed there!
I think Ian is going to buy this Car.
iain, think you need to reveal what your 30 car garage would comprise of…
@Tyrrell's Classic Workshop beautiful car, perfectly presented. One slight correction, @ 27:17 you mean "405 lb/ft", not "405 hp" as mentioned. Just pointing out the "slip of the tongue", keep up your great work & presentations, a gem of a channel for sure.
Iam from germany but i have to say this mercedes , mercedes in general are to me the most ugly unpractical cars i know. They are heavy , no design… .
I remember coming across several 450SEL6.9s on the German freeways in the late '70s. Definitely my favorite sedan of the period.
Then came the outstanding W126 with the alloy five liter V8.
My dad had 1 in 70s… it was the dream car of many back then..
I bought 300SE 87 in 2004 for £500…till now , I regret it that I let it go
Brilliant.. 🙂
Hiya. Word to the wise: "pound-feet" (product) not "pounds per foot" (quotient).
I enjoyed the Wiggle Of Fear you acted out on the steering wheel after accelerating in the “low gear” the 1st time. 😋
Never seen anyone road test a door handle before
Flipping gorgeous car, definitely on my lottery list 👍. My sister had 2 of the same shape years ago, a silver 350SE V8 that was a bit of a pile and a beautiful ex Irish embassy car that was a black 280SE with lovely tan interior which she said was her best car ever.
The real reason that Mercedes did so well was the competition was so bad that it made Mercedes Quality and Engineering really stand out at a time when the British cars were shite.
Any relation to Tyrell racing 🏎 70s ? Ken !
16:52=GRIPPY 🤠🤟😎
Wonderful video – thanks for making it!
A friend's dad had that car in Milan Brown, but with leather. He left it to my friend upon his death. He used to "fly low", as the old timers would say. Tremendous machine!
My dad has one sitting in the shed, been unregistered for quite some time.
Silver with blue interior. Bought it about 30 years ago in Brisbane. Would love to see it back on the road one day.
You’ve not explained why the car besides is comfortable besides do explain fat man
Bullish claims fat fella
Mitsubishi just trying to sit into one bag your head
It’s abit like the lugar008
My dad have one 450 SEL 6.9. It is 1976 model. It is very fun to drive it.
Very sad that MB did so well in the UK market at the time when our own motor industry was dying.
In my opinion, the people who bought foreign cars in the 1970s should now be spending a good chunk of eternity in hell – along with Red Robbo and his friends.
No worries Tyrell, Carrol would love you.
Doorhandle made by Hülsbeck & Fürst "Huf", in Velbert/Germany.
With my pedant hat pulled firmly down over my ears, it's not 'pounds per foot' but 'foot-pounds'.
One foot-pound is the moment resulting from a force of one pound applied at a distance of one foot – so it's pounds times feet, not pounds per foot (which would be an expression of linear density).
German godess. Executive Autobahn 'Sturmer'.
Melbourne Aust circa 2010 a mechanic friend said one of his customers was trying to off load a 6.9 he wanted $AUD 7,500. He could not get any interest, I wanted it but didn't have the ready cash. In the end he just gave it to my mate for free.
For you Mercedes fans, the 1985 movie "Lost In America" starring Albert Brooks featured the 450SEL as a small part of its plot line. Brooks plays an advertising executive who is about to become a partner and is planning to purchase a new Mercedes, which the dealer quotes a price of over $44,000 USD. Shortly after, all his plans blow up in his face which sends him on a journey to "find himself." Later on in the movie, he is approached by a driver looking for directions in non other than a 1974 450SEL in Milan brown which makes a stunning screen appearance. It's a very funny movie and I thought of it immediately upon seeing this beautiful car.
"Frankenheimer 'allegedly' a car guy." Have you not seen Grand Prix as well?
In 1968 Mercedes-Benz received a patent for its counterweight-based door handle. The patent application stated that 1, the counterweight was designed to prevent the inadvertent opening of the door in a side impact, and 2, the ability to install the handle assembly from outside of the vehicle.
The exact words in the patent grant were: "Prevent unwanted lock actuation, e.g. unlatching, at the moment of collision by means of inertial forces."
If the counterweight had other primarry advantage, it would have been stated in the patent application. So Tenacious _E is correct.
Good job on wearing appropriately vehicle-color coordinated slacks!
Mercedes always had problems with their back seats on these models and the W126. I've had both so know. It was like sitting on a trampoline. Appalling in holding you in. I think this model and the W126 did over do it with the plastics too. Even though I did like the Merc interiors, they were no match to a Rolls Royce interior.
Will we get a run down of the personal collection?
My dream❤❤❤❤
All that talk about nitrogen is absolute nonsense. There are some definite benefits to pure nitrogen- especially with regards to moisture and corrosion but the difference in "compressibility" of air and nitrogen (while still in a gas phase) is completely negligible.
Love the episode though. Fascinating information about that suspension system.
Вы там все сумасшедшие, по встречной полосе ездите!!!
With almost 7 liters of displacement, I’m a fan of the “boomy” exhaust note.
Treasure Island=Rip off Britain=fake stitching 😂…..after just watching Ronin again, i was hoping for a burn out. I'm sure the customer wouldn't mind. I hope there isn't a SIG 551 on the back seat
beauty and power🐎🦏
i love thes car very much
Mr. Tyrrell, another great video about a great car, lots of details about this true legend. Thank you so much for producing and sharing.
Greetings from Brazil.
