Angry Kitchen appliances 😂
You forgot to mention how many people you could sneak into drive-in movies for free with those big old trunks 🤣
As there became more and more government mandates on safety and fuel mileage, it completely changed the entire auto industry for the worse. Cars continue to get larger, including their mass. Styling has gotten beyond laughable, and the continued use of technology make self repair impossible. Modern cars are superior without a doubt, but to what extent is arguable. At some point there are diminishing returns and I'd argue we've passed that. I'd happily go back to 1968 and take what was available over what I drive now.
Self balancing/supporting hood hinges. No prop rod to get in the way and no gas struts to ever replace.
when my 79 Pontiac Bonneville Brogham was parked in the garage, it had the best chairs in the house!!
1967 Mercury Cougar had hidden headlights
I suspect the use of BIAS PLY tires (pre-steel belting) had something to do with ride 60 years ago.
"Amen YOU SAID IT " Has always been my opinion, too me those were the cars , mid seventies on back to the sixties and later fifties. Again you bought a true auto. My opinion these auto's today are laughable and over priced for it, and now electric cars, " WHAT EVER ". I'm sure glad you share the same feelings about those automobiles back then as I do and I APPRECIATE IT !
Modern cars will never have that vibe that classic cars of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s have. I truly believe that those cars are the very peak of what a car could look like. Cadillacs, Bel Airs, you can’t get more sexy looking than that!! Yes, the cars today are more practical and efficient from their classic counterparts, but there’s just something about about the look of a classic that’s just beautiful!! I will say this about modern cars: their technology and safety is very efficient. If I could design a car with the exterior and interior of a classic with the technology and safety of a modern, wouldn’t that be the perfect hybrid car? Yes. Yes it would!!!
I burst out laughing when I heard your description of modern cars looking like angry kitchen appliances. I find this to be particularly true of the current styling in the most recent Toyota/Lexus cars. I found that the first generation of the Lexus LS 400 looked like a grouper (species of fish; not a compliment). My dream classic car is a 1972 Mercury Colony Park with the twin lounge seat option. Nothing said "restrained establishment" quite like those cars did.
Nothing rode as smooth as my 62 Cadillac, but on bias ply tires and two inches of snow, it was uncontrollable, and just slid to the nearest curb.
pregnant rollerskates‼️®️™️ 🤮🤮
and those grills on the new cars,
And those stupid, wraparound,
plastic lights/headlamps❗️
Styling for sure. Floor vents in the kick panels under the dash. In pickups . With today’s rear window sliders . I wonder how much air that could move with out the side window noise?
I agree hard to find a modern car that rides like this big old classics I think it has more to do with the size larger cars just seem to ride smoother maybe the weight also has something to do with it as well. Love these videos can't forget about the big cars we grew up with our parents driving.
Great video and analogy. Very much agree on everything in video. My 1974 four-door Lincoln Continental was the best riding car I ever been into this date. My 1966 Oldsmobile was so easy to work on. Had much space under the hood where you could easily get to everything for routine maintenance and tune-ups. My 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis last time I had that was reasonably easy to service problems and tune-up.
Angry kitchen appliances🤣🤣😂🤣🤣. Sadly appropriately describes most modern car designs.
Totally agree about the interiors. Bench seats allow you to splay if you want. And size is important too- no amount of engineering can give that big car ride to a mid size car
1970 COTY Award recipient Ford Torino & 1970 Mercury Mointego
The seats were screwed up by the stupid forward-tilted headrests as well as packaging/durability concerns. Seatbacks are ultra-thin to maximize usable interior volume, and the padding is ultra-stiff so you don't get sagging.
Unfortunately this makes for poor comfort all around.
The hidden headlights I don't miss. I appreciate the safety of DRLs.
The last car I owned with truly comfortable seats was a '97 LHS.
Seat comfort, colors (both interior – there's only black and MAYBE gray on most cars, and exterior – everything is white/gray/black; you're lucky to get a red or a blue, let alone any fun colors), outward visibility, serviceability, and soft and compliant rides are what I miss the most.
The seat comfort and ride quality went because magazines like Road&Track + Car&Driver evaluated the test cars on a race track. Something 99.99% of people would never do. And they set the standard for what a 'good' car was. According to them, you need to feel every bump in the steering wheel ("steering feedback"/"road feel"), you need a firm suspension for handling/turn-in, and you need firm+bolstered bucket seats to hold you while you are whizzing around. Things that 2/3rds of buyers would prefer the OPPOSITE of.
I actually tried to save my 86 Pontiac Parisienne seats for my living room furniture they were so soft and shout out to the 3 on the tree simple transmission and no over engineering
I totally agree, I had a 1991 Honda Prelude, not exactly a classic car but had huge glass area, a very low hood line and a gigantic windshield and flip up headlights… I loved that Honda… and extremely reliable!!!! Only thing I had to replace was the power antenna, it had gotten hit with a surfboard and would not go all the way down and make a horrible noise struggling to retract
Vent windows
Fender skirts
Wide whites
Dual exhaust
Dual rear antennas
Full size convertibles
True wire spoke knockoff
i miss no seatbelts. I was in a car wreck and if i had been wearing my seatbelt i wouldnt be alive!
You nailed it! #1 is surely the lack of aesthetics in modern design. Matter of fact, I think using the word styling in reference to modern cars doesnt even fit at all! There is no styling for the most part!
The best feature I miss is the nonexistent passenger side view mirror. YIKES!!
Cars today don’t have any class. It’s all about technology but I’d much rather have a bustle back Seville or Eldorado with some of todays technology. I miss vinyl tops, coach lights, wire wheel covers, pillowed seats, and power antennas.
i remember reading all the car magazines, and how they criticized domestic vehicles for flat seats, poor handling etc…i agree id rather have some padding in the seats, and a smoother ride…now every car maker is chasing BMW and i hated the BMW i had….hard ride, hard seats, black everything..dull as hell…had several mechanical issues with it at 35000 miles; couldnt get rid of it fast enough…and i for one have had enough of all the ugly look alike suv crap with wheezy 4 cylinder engines on the road, available in 3 colors…black, white, gray…boring as hell
Love your 74 Marquis , I learned to drive on my dad's blue version of that car , he got a few more after that including a metallic brown one . Many of today's cars are so cookie cutter if you took the manufacturing labels it would be hard to tell them apart .
