Knobs save lives. Exactly. I literally hate touch screens. Christ is coming back soon, thankfully, so I won't have to put up with them for much longer.
Iād buy a car that completely reject modern interface design. Take me back to 2000 with nice dials, buttons and switches. Im over āsmartificationā of everything. Especially TVs and their rubbish interfaces.
Today's cars are developed for the new generation that has grown up with iPhones and Android Phones… It's funny how Mercedes has the ability to be autonomously driven but the government will not allow it…
Definitely prefer a big firm knob. Much easier to control. Iād love to own one. Just the one should be enough.
Rory, Brilliant discussion, spot on review citing design over function and hence danger. If you have an accident using this "tech" does the insurance company pay up? Whilst we are at it can we please discuss the weight of electric cars (and the use of natural resources increasing by 40%) and the absolute madness around power outputs and hence acceleration in so called "ordinary" modern cars?
PREACH !!!! I HATE IT THAT EVERYTHING IS BECOMING TOUCH. WHY DO HEATING CONTROLS HAVE TO BE TOUCH ????
100% agree.
This is why I like my 2017 seat Leon still got buttons for the things youād want and I can change my music using āhey siriā
I think having a screen for everything is just dangerous.
My single comment is, if the screen gangs claim screens are better because you can use voice control only to set everything, then why do you have to eliminate the options for the rest of us when you can still have buttons that works with voice controls?
great video but the idrive came for the 2002 7 series or e65. the bmw you showed is from the 80's and 2 generations older than idrive. before that they had a navigation screen in the late 90s but it wasn't the idrive system
Screens are deadly ??????
What about 5G……….
Let's be honest as you pointed out it's all about cost, car manufactures are just doing everything they can to maximise profit – there is NO other reason. I hate it.
Totally agree… less screen…MORE KNOBS!
Thatāll be the Daewoo
For some things gesture control is really nice. If i want to hear the next (or previous) song/audio book chapter, i just wave. Itās easy, i dont need to press a button or talk to the car, and i donāt need to look. Works amazing and isnāt distracting. I think the combination of speaking, using buttons, using a touchscreen and using gestures is key. Something for every situation, and some to use if you canāt be distracted.
I just want an Idrive controller thingy. A screen is fine, but a few buttons never killed anyone.
I agree 100%
Less electronics is better. Love the intro š
It's easy, make legislature that forbids manufacturers from putting in big massive screens into their cars with no physical controls
At the very least new cars won't have it then
I find touchscreens especially the ones with a tablet sitting on a dash looks kind of dorky. And you are right 100%, physical buttons cost more to manufacture over touch screens. My wife has a touch screen in her vehicle and I cannot stand the delay in response and some of the other primary controls which should be on physical buttons. I've lost countless times where Im driving on the shoulder of the road just trying to change radio station.
Iām certain I can speak for all of us car enthusiasts that we have said the exact same thing about on screen controls since they have became the new norm. Having to take your eyes off the road to alter the heating settings for example is mind boggling.
Itās near nigh impossible to accurately write a message blind on a mobile phone these days, thatās after possibly years and years of familiarity with them but yet car manufacturers think itās a good idea to put all the mod cons on a 12ā screen! All just to make the interior feel uncluttered and as Rory correctly implied, cheaper to manufacture.
These ādeclutteredā interiors are also uncharacteristic and bland. The cockpit is supposed to be your home when youāre driving and should feel stylish and comfortable, who wants to live in a house that is interiorly designed exactly the same as every other houseā¦ and thatās the thing these days. Just like every other new build house that pops up, they all look the same, like they have been copied and pasted from Microsoft Paint, the same now can be said for the vast majority of new cars on the road.
To all manufacturers, please bring back character and individuality to our cars and most importantlyā¦ knobs.
THATNK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THIS.
I agree 110%. How are controls that FORCE a driver to take his eyes off the road a good thing? I'm baffled as to how this is even legal. Actually, I'm not. It probably never occurred to anyone that a car company would do something so self-evidently dangerous.
I'll never buy a touchscreen car. Sorry.
Finally! And I would say that same goes for uber driver's and the like, most are driving so focused on the phone to find the customer, they become oblivious to the road.
Speed is no longer the biggest danger. It's these distractions š¤¦āāļø
