I think these common chassis trays are there to prevent owners from seeing seal leaks and getting warranty repairs
Did she have you put used motor in it?
This guy has an awesome gig here. I wonder if you could fit your camera costs into Shop Supplies.
Why water, but no coolant in the pan? If she did not have the oil changed after the run-hot, and before bringing to your shop… She might have something to talk about with a previous shop who supposedly sold her a coolant flush.
It doesn't matter how well built a motor is; straight water will destroy a head gasket, given enough time running. I have personally known of 2 past instances of local shops in my area, jiffing customers by refilling with straight water. Not sure if it was to save costs for the coolant, or to throw a wrench in for future maintenance. But it nonetheless has happened.
was it the oil cooler ???
I’m a Chrysler guy through and through…although my experience has been with the 4 cylinder engines of the 80s and 90s and my wife and I have had 4 of the 3.8 minivan engines that have been tanks…so it depends on what you get. Just my opinion.
Needs a rear head done a lot of those. Cylinders 3 and 5 usually have coolant in it. Prolly has a stored code for p0305 or p0303. And I bet it has between 60-80k on it too.
Lol on the oil absorption pad description! 🤣
for a few more dollars should of bought a sienna mini van you get what you pay for fix it again tony.
That is an honest assessment of the situation. The engine is toast. Thanks for your honesty and thoroughness.

Round and Round!
What if… she made a mistake and put coolant in the oil hole?
Ah yes, the Chrysler Pentascar.
It's a good thing he is a good mechanic and didn't go through a bunch of work and tell the lady that we did a lot of work and charged her a lot of money to tell her her engine is junk
You made the right call!
May that starter RIP, for all the abuse it received, attempting to start the new Chrysler water engine.
I just replaced the Oil filter/cooler assembly on my Chrysler 3.6L. Had the same issues except the water in the oil pan and the engine seized up. The oil cooler is in-between both heads below the lower intake. The oil and the coolant will leak from the seals on the cooler and the block, and will collect in a 5 inch reservoir below it. I found mine after many years of a slow oil leak (1-2 drips a day) to a tea spoon a day on the ground. What's funny is it only took a few hour to replace and I did it myself. The symptoms of the oil leak make it look like a rear main seal has failed.
When a vehicle wont turn over how can you tell if its a bad battery or starter/relay?
These 3.6s we know have had head gasket issues for years. Had almost the same thing come in, starter fuse was blown. Found coolant in oil. Cylinder had hydrolocked and blew the fuse. Couple weeks later another guy called also with hydrolock issues, blew several fuse blocks with a new starter/alt. I think this will turn out to be a new common problem with these year/models
Those heads are known to Crack most think just a head gasket until they restart the engine
OIl cooler was known to crappy
… or it came through the oil filler cap.
Belly pan is for aerodynamics (fuel economy).
A friend of mine had a hydro locking Audi years ago, fortunately for him it turned out to be the EGR cooler, he bypassed it and it’s still working too this day.
Was hoping you’d use the borescope.👍🏴
I know it would have been overkill but it would have been nice to at least know what cylinder it was. Maybe a quick peak down a spark plug hole with a borescope.
Enjoy the infotainment – keep up the good work
Better Late Than Never. The best part of this whole video is that the lady said, "I'm not surprised". I would assume that an upset customer is an awful thing to deal with as a shop owner. It reminds me of the situation during WWll when 2 soldiers would come to the door of a home where a soldier lived and had to inform a wife that her relative was MIA or dead. NO one likes to deliver bad news especially when it has to do with with a persons second or third largest investment. Thanks Eric.
“We all know Chrysler is the bottom of the bucket in the domestic world “
You may have to enter the witness protection program after that statement. But hey I agree with you.
Vehicle 6 yrs old and engine shot. Gotta love Meakuh.
I thought they had terrible trannies
In the heavy truck industry it's super common for egr coolers to pop and leak coolant.
Maybe a good low mileage engine out of the wreckers? If the rest of the vehicle is still good that is. Engine plus re and re is likely a lot less than whole vehicle replacement. Maybe.
Boy, that oil's supper thin. .01W.03. Lol.
My sister bought a new 2017 same issues, within the year had 2 new engines put in. Eventually Chrysler gave them a great trade-in offer for a 2018.
I'd bet it blew the gasket before the overheating. ask me how I know….
