I was at a restoration shop that sends a couple cars to Pebble Beach every year. And believe you me they charged the $85 per hour for every minute spent searching for parts. And the $85 an hour was 2002 price. Probably double that by now.
Let's all drive throw away cars. Whinge fest!
Than god I found you man I was about to buy a 71 continental mark lll is perfect shape but I don’t have the extra money to spend.
I feel the pain but don’t give up on old cars it’s the Journey not the Destination
I have a full system Autel scanner which I have used when she went used car shopping. We walked awary from any seller that would refused to allow me to connect the scanner .
So If you own a car like that. You should source the parts yourself and then take it to a mechanic. Or fix it yourself.
Hey man if you see me at the car show in town with my 63 lincoln this year maybe you can fix some things for me 😂
I used to work as a mechanic at a new car dealership and we had what we referred to as the 5K Policy. What the 5K Policy was that we wouldn't let any vehicle brought to us for a repair out the door without it racking up at least $5,000 in repairs, regardless why the vehicle was brought in. This was accomplished by flat-out lying to these people that their vehicles had all kinds of repairs needed on top of why they brought in their vehicles. If this didn't work we would loosen belts, bolts or screws, or drain fluids before we sent these people home after their initial repair. So, this would result in the vehicles being brought back within usually three days and then the problems would be "fixed" and lo and behold the total repairs would be right around $5,000. Keep in mind this 5K Policy was a directive from the top brass of this dealership becuase it accomplished several things: 1) It made a lot of money for the repair portion of the dealership; 2) This 5K Policy had a 50 percent chance of the people who owned the vehicles being conned into thinking their cars were not worth repairing; 3) These people were then offered virtually nothing for these vehicles as trade-ins, so the dealerhship got these vehicles for a song and the owners got conned into letting them go for nothing; 4) The dealership always had a fresh influx of used cars for their lot that they got for virtually nothing; 5) It falsely created repeat new vehicle customers.
doing research for parts is very time consuming
send them to me, i eat glutten of self punishments
Man that thing is a starship!
Thank you tremendously for being Soooo Honest! One lesson in life is you have to step back and leave emotions aside in some decisions!
Maybe should think to change all mechanical parts, suspension + exhaust + engine,
Electrical, so the customer can still have the classic they like, but underneath it all new life
wizard might be one of the most negative ppl of all time..folks
Appreciate your honesty, the sad thing is though that this will also become a billionaires' hobby.
Crazy. You’d think with the internet 20 years hense it would be easier to find parts. But these old cars are OLD. My own 72 Lincoln , with only 22000 miles, has been at the garage for 3 weeks. I find the parts for them thankfully and Ive fixed my own stuff if its in my skill set. ( like my own window master swtich needed replacement ) But the reason my car has been there 3 weeks, is the ac. The auto climate control was fried. One place 1000 miles away rebuilds them, and it takes over a week, and they themselves said the ones they have in stock were crap. So I suggested a bybass with a Vintage Air slim line system. You can’t repair these as built sometimes. You have to replace or upgrade. The days of “ originality first “ are for the concours guys. Not a living, driving, enjoyable car.
This also plays to the car show folks and those judges who stick to old school snobbery when judging a car, giving it demerits for having after market non oem fixes, IE non-:original” Those people can suck it. If you want a trailer queen fine. Let em sit. Hell roll it out on dollies to show it. But if you wanna enjoy it, fix it however you can and just drive it.
I like old vehicles too but as even my 94 chev truck parts are becoming no longer available I guess it will be my last. It's sad, but I think you're right.
Having owned a dozen (or so) 60's – era cars over the last twenty years, I totally know what you are talking about. Even though with a paid "honest" inspection, or they were marketed as "frame up restored", each one of them cost me many thousands of dollars. One of them I decided to restomod. Forty thousand (plus) dollars later, it was worth less than it was before I purchased it. Except for my older BMW, which, incidentally the factory still makes parts for, I sold my last 60's musclecar four years ago. No more. Sad because I really enjoyed driving them – when they weren't in the shop. Buying at auctions is worse because no opportunity to do a thorough inspection. And when you do buy at auction, there is buyer's premium, sales tax, shipping it home and then the bill from the few mechanics who actually work on those cars. In my experience, a $50,000 car bought at auction will most certainly end up costing about $70,000 and I still have a used car. Ugh.
I once had a 1982 Grand Marquis I took into a shop to get the muffler replaced. When I picked it up, it had no brakes. The then 20 year old rubber brake line blew out when they went to put it on the lift.
Man, I can relate, I owned a 1970 Coupe Deville that I bought as a 15 year old Cadillac Dealership serviced car and was totally unmolested, and I drove it everyday for 34 years, and noone EVER put a wrench on that car but me so it remained up to Cadillac standard because I had a perfect example of what that car should be. Sadly I lost the car to the elements, so after selling it, I found a '70 Deville (convertible) locally and bought it. I have spent 3 years (in my 60's) rebuilding this car to Cadillac standard but unlike my '70 Coupe, THIS car was nickle and dimed by the previous owner, and I have busted my ass correcting a multitude of items. It became clear to me very soon after buying it, that this car unlike my Coupe only needed EVERTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING. I will continue to work on it and love the car, it's starting to really come together. There is a connection to my dad, gone 40 years now, so I have to own the car just for the sentimental reasons. Hang in there man, your're probably half my age, never give up.
My 1964 Fury is also going away. I am over being sentimental and basically sick of dealing with it & don't know what to do with it.
Rather than refusing to work on them, disclose that you will have lots of hours into parts searches and that the customer will have to pay for it. It’s not unfair if you disclose it at the beginning, and a reasonable consumer should be able to understand that your time is not free. Classic cars aren’t cheap to own…
With as much data as we have someone needs to make a factory for the most common classics to be able to completely rebuild the parts needed that frequently go out and just stick to those parts or requests. Someone with the money and investments already like Jay Leno or Jerry Seinfeld
Of course these cars get sick. It’s like an open hospital ward. You bring in sick ones and it’s contagious. Probably none of these cars are vaccinated.
Balcamp Ready-sleeve?
Or is that something just from the dinosaur days, like me?
This country obviously still has one or two millionaires left if folks are buying "fixer-uppers", but HIRING SHOPS to "fix-er up" rather than taking it on themselves
"Mildred! Mildred!
I just watched a video from a shop in Kansas!
This guy knows his stuff!
He was saying how he doesn't want to work on Lincolns anymore.
This is the guy we should bring the 53 Roadmaster to.
Hell, we're just down here in Pensacola. Not that far, let's give'em a visit!" Roflmao
