I have seen a lot of Can Am Spyders in Canada, and I have seen only 1 slingshot at a cancer fundraiser biker reunion.
Should do the same video on a Vanderhall.?
Unlike a convertible, there is no top for rainy or cold weather. Or to protect it when parked – people passing by can just hop in, maybe grab something, etc. And it would benefit from being garage kept more than most vehicles.
I laugh at everyone I see driving these things. They are three wheeled misfits. They are purchased on a whim and disposed of expeditiously.
As a motorcyclist, I didn’t like the idea of the Polaris at first, but it has grown on me. Still wouldn’t own one, but I’d gladly rent one for a day.
I own a 2015 5 speed I like it, drove it on a 1400 mile road trip. Made lots of friends, what kind of motor does it have? Gas
I never understood this car, worst of both worlds and looks goofy to me when I see people riding it.
I have seen a few of these on the road, I am curious about the safety. The driver choices were making me and everyone else around feel a sensation.
I can't get over this video. I think your missing the point entirely. It's not a car and it shouldn't be compared to a Miata or any other convertible for that matter. It's also not a motorcycle. I will admit the autodrive needs to be improved significantly but the manual transmission is awesome and shifts smoothly. Also as far as power is concerned I can guarantee it's faster than any stock Miata, times are 0-60 in the high fours. That's not to say the Miata is not a good car, Miata's are awesome and handle great but it's in a different class all by itself. And to mention the power of an SUV in this segment is absurd. It is a bit noisy but that's part of the experience of being out in the open air. Have you heard a Harley compared to a sport bike? to some Harley's make nothing but noise, to each his own though. I own 2 of these in manual that I rent out on a car sharing platform and over 75% of the renters want to purchase one and some have. Your also missing many of the features the vehicle comes with and also the fact that it's gas mileage is excellent around 45 hwy, 35 city. Let's talk safety. Is a car safer than a slingshot? of course! but a slingshot is safer than a motorcycle and people still buy motorcycles. Let's talk about the 3 wheels, a Can-Am Spyder is a motorcycle with 3 wheels and it's still not safer than a slingshot. not to say there's anything wrong with Can-Am's but the slingshot has a tubular frame that offers some protection. You want a car… buy a car. You want a convertible… buy a convertible. You want a motorcycle… buy a motorcycle. You want something in between that handles great, offers an unique immersive experience, draws attention and has great gas mileage, buy a Slingshot, nothing comes close. Unless you've driven one (manual preferably) you can't judge it.
really appreciate this episode on the slingshot. i was seriously intrigued and interested in this, so it was good to gain better insight. they look like a smaller version of something batman would drive in the recent batman movies but it sounds like they're just not as fun to drive as they look.
it's unfortunate the driving experience doesn't seem to be a good one. they look cool but i i'd need something with protection from the weather. they need something with a removable top and cover for where there are no windows on the doors.
It is so cute that Jake is so excited about this car. Too bad he does not like it too much and neither do any of them. I got to rent one of these once, and to be honest, their dislike is not misplaced.
Death trap !!!
If it was available in a stick shift… why didn't you get the manual stick?
I had a 2021 R model Slingshot. I had the auto. Bought it brand new. I hated the brakes, clunk in the universal, and the way it down shifted. I had it for 11 months abd sold and bought a Vanderhall, it's much better.
My bet is, the first time you are caught in a rain storm with your wife, it will be up for sale. As a biker for 30 years, riding around in 100 degree heat with a helmet etc. is not fun. A convertible car is a much better choice.
These Guys 100% missed the Point!! I have had my 2021 Slingshot (MANUAL 5 SPEED) for over a year and have over 8000 miles on it and can't get enough of it! I seen the CR video and thought WHY DID THEY GET AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION? I am a sport bike rider and love curves but this makes me happy to drive. I added the Polaris accessory of 25HP (stock on the R Model) and wider wheels and it is glued to the road in curves. Took it to Deals Gap for a few days and could not stop laughing. The CR guys have completely missed the mark on that review… disappointing.
Get a real car for that price, you can get a GTI for that.
If you want a car like experience, buy a car. if you want a motorcycle like experience, buy a bike. This review is (IMHO) is off base for a couple of reasons. 1. You tested an automatic when a manual is available? What car person does that? B. You keep comparing to a four wheeled vehicle (spoiler alert, it's not.) Your review is sort of like sitting around complaining that the picture quality of the radio you bought doesn't compare to your TV.
Also, why did you keep talking about it being trackable? Slingshot owners (my self being one) typically don't buy them for the track. Is it noisy? Yes. Is it designed for open road highway driving? Not really.
I'm 60 years old, owned numerous motorcycles and cars, including some really nice Mustangs, and I have enjoyed the Slingshot more than any toy I have bought. That's what it is, a toy to be enjoyed, not a mode of transportation. If you buy it for that reason and understanding exactly what you are purchasing, the Slingshot is a complete blast.
My wife and I rented a 5-speed manual slingshot in Colorado and drove it over Cottonwood Pass. We had so much fun in the open air blasting through the mountainous scenery. It was four hours of our life we will always cherish but I would never buy a Slingshot. A month later we were proud owners of a new manual trans Mazda Miata.
This is for car drivers who want most of the good experience of a motorcycle, but much safer than a motorcycle (stability, cage, roll bar, etc.).
The fun dramatically increases after the learning curve: accelerating, highways driving, handling, shifting, weather prep.
Shifting is MUCH smoother when the driver does it (either manual or paddle shifting with very slight pause off the gas.)
The downsides of the open-air experience is well known beforehand, and still better than a motorcycle for car drivers.
I’m nearly a year in, and absolutely love it.
The Sling Shot with A Normal Automatic Transmission would not pass it's Dot Maximum Weight requirement of going under 1,700 pounds in order to be registered as A Motor Cycle as The Can Am Three Wheel Motor Cycle.
