I remember playing with a bumper jack as a kid for some reason my dad still had one around. Why I don't know I mean I was born in 89 I'm a 90s kid
I like how he goes "DOOOOOOOODS with wrenches here…"
When I was growing up, my Dad owned Naranja Tire, down in Naranja Florida. I worked there on and off and these were the types of cars and trucks that came in. Real vehicles with metal bumpers. He had these roll around air jacks that you rolled under the bumper and hooked the air hose to the jack and pushed a lever and you could lift the car 4 feet in the air if you wanted, if you put one jack in front and another in the back. We would typically just lift them enough to get the tires off though. Those jacks have become obsolete because all of the little plastic cars and trucks running around today. Your video brings back memories.
Yeah my 79 elcamino came with one…….I dont wanna talk about 💩🥺😵
The bumpers in the 50's and early 60's were strong enough to hold a car using a bumper jack
I never had an issue with mine but I only used it for flat tires. If there was anything more than that I just used a floorjack. The people I know had issues with them were people that used then to do work on the car.
Operater error cause most people are stupid!!!
This was the sexy nova. The nova itsself was ugh at best
My ‘68 Olds Delta 88 had a bumper jack, but it had a plate with a hook on the bottom to grab & hold the bumper, the same with my ‘69 Mercury Marquis.
Love me some non-Nova Novas
Bumper jack is great for off road, wouldn't get under it
They were good for breaking down a tire off the wheel. Put the base were tire meets wheel and ues weight of car to break the bead.
I used one of mine to jack up and support my mom's porch when we replaced the support posts.
Worked like a champ lashed with chain against a 4×4 post.
Was that an original bumper???
Not some redo or cheapie chaaiinaah replacement?
U need the safety brake/put in gear/blocks?
Scary. Thanks for the safety reminder
AND they lean to the side. Quick, convenient but definitely dangerous
I had a 75 Chevelle Malibu years ago with the same slots in bumper and jack. No problems whatsoever!!
Wellness scenario, obviously it was the bumper that was dangerous.
Seems like they could amend that by adding support from the frame directly inside the bumper but okay auto manufacturers
Leave it to Chevy to give you a jack that can't hold up your car without destroying your car and potentially killing you wow an engineer certainly f*** that up
Looks like an aftermarket bumper if so then it's the aftermarket to blame
Had a 75 apollo , now i got a 76 t bird with bumper jack i feel like 007 i like to live dangerously
Those things sucked. I seen a bumper that didn’t have a slot and the jack just had a point sticking out instead of a hook shape and someone just put the little point under the bumper that had a flat edge under only about a half inch. Miraculously it didn’t slip off. When I was a teen a woman that drove a big ol boat got me to change a tire for her and I used that stupid jack from her car. It was leaning but didn’t fall.
Cool love that tongue weight!
I have myself a 74 Apollo good bless xbodies
I had an omega.
Remember jacking up a 66 Galaxie and the wind blew it off the jack when it caught the open trunk lid.
No, someone most likely was doing something wrong using the jack !
Those where the crappy ones. The good ones had big piece of steel that contoured the bumper and hooked the bottom. Just make sure you chalk the wheels left on the ground.
The hook is for pulling your wheelwell out after some one hits you. Best body work tool ever.
I imagined him have a huge beard
How bout getting them down. Id hit the lil switch n let it click it self down
Holy moly. Wich engineer thought this is good idear?!
My 74 monte carlo still has this too ,but I'm never using it
That looks like a Jack-All.
Copy that Bravo Alpha Delta, India Delta Echo Alpha, staying the fuck away from that thing.
give to me now.
If only bumpers were made just slightly thicker the idea would have worked perfect
Unintentional face reveal lol
Later years had something of a hook or cradle that hooked to the bottom of the bumper and spread the weight out some.
One of the issues with bumper jacks was how high you had to lift them to get the tire off the ground. (But you weren't laying on the ground to put it in place)
I remember guys with two Jack's so they could get both rears in the air pretty quickly. I remember everyone trusting them as much as an old handyman jack🤦
Bumper jacks are also dangerous because if you don't get the pall to latch all the way into the gear, it could slip out and start the death bounce that sends the lever arm flying up to pop it out of the next tooth and each time it falls to the next tooth, the lever flies back up and pops it out again so it falls one tooth at a time and sends the lever up hard enough to keep going. so the car comes down one step at a time with the lever swinging for a chance to catch you under the chin over and over, hoping to break your jaw and knock you out cold.
