im really struggling to not leave trails visible in direct sunlight when doing minor corrections (mainly an issue on black cars). Any advice? (clay barring , tar removal etc first of course!)

Justin Hein here from Organ Mountain Detailing, and if you haven't purchased a wet vac yet, I would highly recommend a Prolux machine. You can vacuum, blow, soak, shampoo and extract with it. Check it out.
