Ive never been a GM fanboy but I have never understood how GM chose Buick over Pontiac when they stood in front of the taxpayer with a tin cup. GM was ruined by their own arrogance and I my opinion they still are.
Very interesting!
Thanks!
GM brands made sure that most of their cars were able to be recognized as its own model vs Ford and Chrysler. The mid 70s was when GM began to rebadge, mostly with their compact and economy cars. Ford and Chrysler made many cars that were hard to tell apart from their cousins.
As for the designs on those 2 cars, the Marquis has a smooth, streamlined, contemporary look while the Bonneville looks classy, upscale, and royal. The Marquis would be a car for a mobster, family, store manager, and college student, while the Bonneville would be a car for weddings, Hollywood, Las Vegas, and upscale business people.
Merc, not Ford. But good vid.
Adam I really love all your cars. My favorite is the green 71 Marquis but the Bonneville , Continental coupe and this Mercury are awesome as well. All your cars are great
Back in the days when nobody gave a RIP about gas prices!!!
3 absolutely beautiful cars. Outstanding
I always thought the so-called Coke Bottle shape also included a more rounded 'tucked in' bottom edge as seen from the front. More circular like an airplane fuselage.
Pontiac! The Ford no.
Love the videos.
Another great video. There’s nothing like the mid 60s styling from Pontiac. A perfect blend of muscle, luxury, power, tasteful chrome, etc just overall sexy. This all coming from a Ford guy. I’d love to see GM return to the pinnacle of design.
Mercurys are often underrated. Your Marquis is stunning! 2 door fullsize cars are often really impressive but that Marquis stands out in your fleet
Wait a minute???
Those are painted pinstripes near the rocker panel on the 68 Mercury???
Show us!!!
🙂
3 yrs difference was a lifetime in "60s design years"
I would take the Pontiac over the ford . I have owned both brands and prefer the GM product
Pontiac Bonneville is a car with beautiful design: Mercury…
I'm a Ford guy but I love 1965 fullsize Pontiac's.
To my eye, 1965 represented the high water mark for American automobile design. GM was the leader (consider the Impala, the Riviera, the 2d generation Corviar); with the '65 Pontiac the most striking and beautiful. At the same time, 1965 also saw some beautiful designs from GM's competitors (I'm thinking of the Galaxie, the Imperial and, of course, the Mustang). It would have been almost impossible to buy an ugly car that year. Really remarkable.
Interesting thought Take pics of the Pontiac read end compared to your Marquis base black from ten years later the taillights look identical… 3 rectangles plus backups on each side
The Ford shoulder is a reference to the 61 Lincoln, especially with the W front grill.
