Totally agree with this video, I love my 1999 C43 and one of my favourite parts is the layout of the clocks. My only criticism of them is that in the UK (where we measure in Miles Per Hour), Mercedes added this around the outside of the speedometer and it doesn't flow anywhere near as nicely as the rest of Europe with the KM/H only layout; the speedo is not the same design as all the other dials. Once you've spotted that it will stand out on all UK/US Mercedes I bet. Sorry.
Thank you for this Chris.
Love this SL!
The beard is taking over!
All that and a glass panorama roof too. Which is something you can no longer get from Mercedes to complete your roadster experience. That is true no compromise value.
Those are amazing years of the Benz.
Love the review and I have a 1999 sl320 v6 and agree with everything you say. They’re lovely things but if you rag them around you’ll be disappointed but waft around and you’ll feel like a millionaire
On the gearbox… If I drive my SL relaxed, it feels very much like a slush box. If I’m driving a little aggressive and punchy with the throttle and brakes, it feels like it “adapts”. And when I stop and shift into park or reverse it feels a little more “aggressive” in the way it engages. I don’t think it’s an issue. I believe it’s supposed to feel that way.
Proper review
Have mine fore 15 years still love it
Great video Chris. I’ve fallen in love with 90s Mercedes and it’s all I’ve driven ever since I learned to drive. The “cliched” bits like the over engineering are what make these cars still appealing to me, 20 something years later.
Great color combo on yours
Subtlety and class. Much better then the modern era of orange break calipers, screens and garish logos all over the interiors. Just a solid, sophisticated german car made for grown men and women
YES LETS PUT A BIG 'ENGLAND' AT THE START….TO REMIND US IT HAS BEEN FILMED IN THIS SHIT HOLE OF A COUNTRY!!!
Oh you're down my way ! (Chew Valley) – good roads round here 🙂
You think you feel old!!!??? I remember when they debuted this platform and they were brand new at the dealerships in Beverly Hills California🤣🤣🤣
They should come up with a manual conversion for the roof I had a 1989 Cadillac Allante that I could put up the roof in literally 9 seconds
Own a 1998 sl500. Great car.
1 HOUR TV SHOW ???!!!!! ID EVEN PAY TO WATCH THE BBC IF THEY HAD AN HOUR OF CHRIS WITHOUT ADVERTS.
I've owned a 96 SL 500 like Chris' since 2016 and these 9 minutes were like listening to myself talking in the mirror. Chris has absolutely nailed it why you want one of these. The sequence of listening to all the clunks and bangs of the roof opening and closing… all that's missing is "Greaaaat success" in your best Borat voice every time it completes the sequence.
We need a captain to elaborate on the engines ( 01:45 ) ?
Watching this again, it's just the comfort in delivery that Chris Harris is more real then the other folks in the same arena. Next pint is on me Chris whenever your by.
Ahh. The R129 Merc. Bought one for my Dad.
1992 sl500 Charcoal with Hardtop.. he enjoyed it for 6 months. And one day said. I should have bought it 20 yrs ago for him while his back was strong enough to get in an out of a car that sits so low.😂🤣. It has sat for 6 yrs now, and the Traction control messed up and blew the Motor. But it still looks Great on the side of the house.. I will rebuild it one day. For now it's has great Asthetic Value. I was just about to sell it, and C.H. just reminded me just how special these cars still are. 💯
The biggest problem is the steering wheel on the wrong side and you driving on the wrong side.
Thought I'd update. I finally got my SL500 and I absolutely LOVE it. I sometimes rewatch this because you state my feelings so well I could not have done better. Cheers!
I love mine too … 1990 300sl. Solid and gorgeous blue color.
Keeping the dream alive.
i bought a 2001 sl500 triple black for 4500 with 90k miles, dropped another 6k in parts and the thing is a beast, super enjoyable, easy to work on and for the price they are unbeatable.
I’ve had my 2000 magma red SL500 for 7 years now. I increased the recorded miles from 35 k to 70 k. Gotta love the old R129s.
