You're correct about the locomotives. I just watched your vid on the "hybrid" Nissan, and a train was the first thing I thought of. I'm a train driver, running the 1.7km long coal trains in central Queensland. The diesel ones are 4000 class Clyde locomotives, with a 140ltr two stroke V12 diesel with Roots type blowers. It makes around 3000hp at a max of 900rpm, and there are four locomotives in a 102 wagon train pulling about 10,500 tonnes fully loaded at a max of 80kph. They're reasonably efficient, ramping up and down as power is demanded by the loads placed on it, controlled by the electronic governor. The V12 engine is the size of a Landcruiser, and the generator being driven by it is a bloody great thing the size of a Mini.
