Nice little car! You really need to take your young assistant along for the road photos shoots! 🥵
Bonny little car, my dad had one in grey, I remember he traded in a Morris Traveller ( split windscreen) , the Morris failed it's test miserably through lack of a floor so the garage kept the car and sorted my dad out with the Standard , subsequently traded for a Herald but that is another chapter.
I can see that this video turned out really well with all these outside shots… Poor Harley must have been running a lot! In return we need to help you with your channel: CAR TRACTION
Hi Rick, be careful not to over adjust the tappets in trying to quieten them. My experience with the 948cc engine is that it is inclined to burn exhaust valves.
a lovely little car. and in great condition. thanks for taking us for a drive in it . very enjoyable. as all your videos are.
Gorgeous little car! Looks like you have a good example and it runs nicely.
Lovely run out. The 8 looks great, well done Harley. It runs and drives well too. Sounds solid and rattle free for a car of its era and age. Love it.
Aw your standard look amazing! Great video again. You and your son have made a fantastic job. Wish I had one!
She is looking great partly down to Harley's cleaning and polishing, well done that lad! Sometimes with some old cars the tappet noise comes take a while to resolve but I don't need to tell you that. At least it isn't one of those that sounds like a bag of nails all the time, won't mention names but you know the one? Anyway that was a good first drive out. Just a thought but could you design a small catch mechanism for those seats? It would be very light perhaps a magnet descretly mounted on one side of the rear of each of the seats. Not wishing to interfere, thanks Rick for sharing this video. 👍 👍
Very interesting video, around 1953 a friend of my fathers bought a new Standard 8, it was quite basic, non opening boot, sliding windows, no hub caps and I think only one windscreen wiper. Several years later I had a Standard 10, not a bad car, an interesting feature was a reserve on the petrol tank, there was a round brass knob below the rear seat, if the seat was unoccupied you could slide your hand back to turn it on just before it ran out.
A highly sucessful first run out. Well done to you and the little Standard. I'm sure that the little 8 will prove to be a valued member of the OCC fleet.
Wow! I think I enjoyed that drive almost as much as you did
It's great that she's running so well considering her age.
Wishing you both many happy and trouble-free miles together.
Superb.. thanks
Rick
Would a couple of discreetly-hidden (rare earth?) magnets be enough to hold the rear seat-backs in place?
she has come out nice rick
A lovely little car for a 1950's driving experience. In the trade if there was wear on the actual tappets of some cars we used to grind it out on a grinder. A call for some Velcro on the back seat I would think.
Personally I’m not into those stickers, but I watched the explanation. It’s a lovely little thing, and In just the right condition. There are two in a garage near me. I haven’t knocked yet, but I might!
Nice little car.Once the tappers are sorted.
Nice POV video but mic too close which muffled the audio? 9/10 👍
First car I ever drove was a standard 10 , never forgot the experience and loved it, this brings memories flooding back
That engine sounds awful. I surprised it completed the vid.
Hi, thanks for watching, a full list of the videos on the channel is here:

If there are any petrolheads that you know that might find this kind of thing interesting, please pass on one of these links, thanks!
I thought that the standard 8 had an 803 cc engine, whereas it was the standard 10 that had the 948cc engine.
Another Standard 8 coming up for auction at Mathewsons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjrKZvaTzRU
My first car !! it was a 1957 model Reg No was VS7831. Loved it !! 🙂
It does look good with the lights and stickers, very sporty. I was reading online that there was a twin carburettor conversion kit offered by the factory as an accessory from the mid 50s although not a production line option. Maybe best not to show that to Junior just yet. 😊
Hello there Rick. I drove past a Farm near me and saw your Standard on the day of the Audlem Festival of Transport. I came back to it 3 times during the day with a full compliment of 1950's spanners to offer help but you may have used other transport to get to the show. I went to the Farm again today but noticed it had gone. I hope all is well now. Best wishes. Billy
Enjoyed this brought back memories. I bought a Super8 in 1964 for £95! kept it for 3 years doing lots of miles during my student years, changed it for a Vitesse 6 after that for £260.
This gem is as old I am!
My tappets need adjusting as well…
Hi, just found your site. The Standard caught my eye. A 1957 Standard 8 was my first restoration. My twin brother and I both passed our driving tests in it in the mid 1980's. Used it regularly around Nottingham. Used to travel in it to Ironbridge, Brosely and Bridgenorth to visit family. Now live in Devon. Regrettably, our lovely Standard was run into and written off some years ago. When thinking of spares think Triumph Herald. Same for engine, dynamo, starter, clutch, clutch master cylinder, brake cylinders and brake shoes. The Standard Motor club keep spares. In 1956, the driver's side sunvisor, heater and hub caps were extra ! We miss our little Standard. By the way, Standard referred to the Roman Standard, not standard (as in ordinary) production.
This is the first car I ever had on the road in 1979 as you might expect I pushed it too hard as a young chap might and blew a whole in one of the pistons trying to het it to go faster !! Lovely little car , not sure about street cred ! ! at the time, I wish i could have kept it, ( I did rebuild the engine before I sold it ) a great video thanks for sharing this gem, xx
I owned that car!!
