Eliminator IS THE BOSS
Coolest looking damn clunker of a car I ever owned.
My dad bought a brand new 68 Cougar as his fun car. Yellow with a black vinyl top. 390 2V GT with automatic.
When I turned 16 took my drivers test in it. Within 10 minutes was at our local drag race stretch of road. Had to wipe the rear quarter panels with gasoline to get the burnt rubber off before I took it home.
Several years later I bought a 69 Cougar. 390 2V (non GT). Pulled it and put in a built 289 with 4 speed. Fun cars with a unique style.
My first car was a 88 they looked nothing like a muscle car car by then, it was more of a luxury coupe.
Being an Australian, seeing one of these is a very rare event. I was in Vegas and saw an XR7 'Eliminator' – what a fantastic looking car… Cherry Red with a White interior.
Personally, I think it's better looking than the Mustang 🐎
Its pretty simple. All cougars were v8s, all had 9" rear end, export braces, and better standards options. Just do to the reinforcement they are likely to be in better structural condition today.
They are a luxury mustang, very sweet car
My first car ….. wish I still had it
Hi I had a 68 Cougar . It was my first car Leather bucket seats. 3 speed on the floor . It was a used car.
My dad's first car he bought when he was 16 was a used 1967 Cougar XR7 GT 390 big block. The car was brown with an all wooden dash and tan interior. The engine was blue with chrome air cleaner and valve covers that said powered by Ford on them.
Had two cougars in my lifetime and if i could go back in time i would get my canary yellow semi vynal black top car again
I was one of the lucky few who had a 1969 Eliminator Boss 302. Despite it's rather heavy weight it was a great driving car and looked marvelous in Yellow. In retrospect I probably should have opted for the 428 since the 302 – despite 290 HP and a 3.50 gear was slow off the line.
The 1970 Eliminator was the best looking Cougar in my opinion. Some other fun facts you missed, in 1968 the Cougar teams almost beat out the Mustang teams in SCCA for the championship. The next year funding was pulled and Dan Gurney went over to Plymouth. In 1970 there were 2 Boss 429 Cougars.
Sister ? GFY
Big Brother.
67 was the best
had a 1969 cougar, loved it, wish I still had it.
I owned a brand new 67 Cougar with a high perf. 289 with a 4 bbl, light blue with a black vinyl roof. One of the most fun cars I have ever had. Sadly it was rear ended in 1971 and written off. Loved that car! Thanks for the memories.
A hot rod with style and comfort. WAY classy, but with balls.
I owned a 69, can you guess my favorite
I had a 1967 Dan Gurney Special back in the day, dropped a hi perf 302 into her 😀
I own a 69 cougar my favorite car I've ever owned
you have got that right, the cougar is a beautyfuly designed car, nevet did get the mustang getting all the attention.Any of you see that build where they fast backed the cougar,it will make you drool.so sweet.
I think it was a good decision to use the "Cougar" name for Mercury. "Ford Cougar" just doesn't click.
You only think, your car is your's… When you register the car… You are actually signing it over, to the state… you only think you own the car… It's the state's car… When you pay tax on it, every year… You are actually paying the lease to the car… It's unconstitutional to pay tax, on private property… But the car dealer, won't tell you this… same goes for the house, you think you own… ALSO is signed over to the state… Not taxes you pay every year, but leasing IT, from the state……. Wakey wakey Americans… THAT corrupt corporation in Washington DC, is fucking us…….
Don't know about Trump, but the rest of the US PRESIDENTS ARE RELATED, COUSINS… STILL think you voted for any of the US PRESIDENTS… You only think you did….
I have always love the Mercury car's. And the Cougar is a hot one.👍
The sequential rear directionals on current audis reminded me of this car from 50 years ago. Great to see it!
Gen 1 Cougar is my favorite car of all time.
I have a red 1968 cougar with the white vinyl top with a 302
Id rather have a cougar eliminator than a boss 302… jus saying..
I got my license in 1979 and had my eye on a Candy apple red with white convertible top 68 Cougar. Sadly it was not to be and I ended up with a 70 Maverick.
At 2:44 – It’s my car! Mercury Cougar XR-7. Even had the vinyl top! Bought it for $600 in 1977. It had a 289 cu. In. V8 w/a 4-barrel carb. Vroom!
No subsequent generations looked as good as the original.
Around 1975, my first car was a 1970 Cougar…..I loved everything about it.
1st Gen
I Liked the Cougar twice as much
I'd say mine would be the 2nd generation with the 351 Cleveland and a top speed of 144 mph
Mercury never would have gotten the go-ahead to modify the "Vomit" (Comet) to make the Cougar as Ford had modified the Falcon to make the Mustang. In the latter's case, as the narrator points out, it far exceeded original sales expectations, so badge-engineering the Cougar out of the Mustang, making it generally plusher and marketing more as a personal luxury car with enough sports car performance was a fairly low-risk and obvious move. Buyers that wanted more raw power and muscle car features wouldn't have cared for the Mercury line anyway, the Ford Mustang and/or Torino were enough.
The cougar rocks!
You forgot the Eliminator. The first two generations had purpose.
The Cougar was is and always will be a legendary and beautiful car.
My Dads cousin had a 1970 convertable XR7 I used to ride my bike to his house and he would take me out in the cat. this was in the 70s and the 80s he sold the car in the mid 90s but my favorite Cougar is the 1970 Eliminater in compatition orange. i got only one tatto and it is on my inside left forarm and it is the walking cat. And going the correct direction
Give me a Mercury Cougar over a Mustang any day of the week.
